It Was a Great Week!
Lisa finally has a hot shower! (At least she does when she has power -GRIN) It is very exciting - she didn't have anything beyond a sink to wash in till a few months ago - and now they have put real electricity into her place so she has a hot shower, and both her tiny bathroom sink and the sink in her main room have hot water too! She also has lights in both her tiny bath room and her main room, as well as one by her front door. She only has 2 outlets to plug things into but with the lights on a separate circuit she can see and keep her fridge plugged in and run her hot plate - all at the same time - such decadence! GRIN
While she doesn't have actual heat - I gather no one does in her community, as the hot season changes to the cold season in Namibia at least she'll be able to do her hand laundry, wash her hands, and take showers with hot water. That will make things feel so much better and with luck cut back on all the winter colds she got last year!
As Lisa is quick to remind us while she still misses lots of stuff from home (computers, computers, computers, oh and TV, good mass transit, fresh fruits and vegetables, and us of course!) she is grateful for these improvements in her living standard! SMILE.
Still Doesn't Have A Chair
I guess she started out with one but the Hostel got more learners and they needed it back a long time ago - so she sits on her cot or on the floor. I can't imagine what it's like to miss chairs. Or sleep on a cot for 2 and a half years.
She's managing without access to an ATM, but still misses it. Ah well.
School
It was a pretty good week - the learners were all fairly good. She'll be half way through the term on Wednesday. And the learners are all using the school library more and more - could be that they're seeing all those new books she's added that we (and you dear friends and family) have sent her to build up said library!
She's actually "caught some learners reading" and that feels good - sort of like she's actually accomplishing something for real! Turning kids anywhere on to books is a great accomplishment!
Drama at the Hostel
Seems like there is some sort of chaos going on at the hostel next door. Her friend Erna who works there doesn't even understand what's going on but the net result is that 2 of the supervisors/teachers may be leaving Monday. Will let you know next week how that turned out!
Thinking about that reminded Lisa of Obama being "No Drama Obama" and she sure sees the positive side of lack of drama in general. "Drama belongs on stage" is her thought! She's pleased that Obama is still getting good ratings in the polls, and she hopes he can do the impossible and bring Democrats and Republicans together.
Odds and Ends
March 20th is a day off for the Namibian Independence Day, and for Easter she gets Good Friday and Holy Monday off. Not a lot of "vacation time" but a day off here and there helps you catch your breath while teaching.
She didn't get any mail this week but the hot shower made up for it (GRIN) maybe next week she'll get something - we have 2 packages and one white envelope in the pipeline so something should arrive eventually!
Have a Good March everyone - since ours is starting out so nice weather wise perhaps there will be a surprise or two by the end of the month! Who knows -The Shadow? - GRIN -
Till Next Week -
